A charity has recently announced its plans to deliver 200 four-wheel drives to help Ukraine’s military.
Pick-ups for Peace is calling for donations of old vehicles from British farmers, and will drive them into the war-torn country across the Polish border.
Vince Gillingham, co-founder of Pick-ups for Peace, which is led by the agricultural industry, told Farmers Weekly: “The war won’t wait, and we must do everything we can to help our friends in Ukraine.”
He went on to say the 45 pick-ups that have been delivered so far “have already and continue to save countless lives”.
They have been used to pick up those who have been injured on the front line, as well as transport food, generators, medical supplies and essential resources around the country.
“The vehicles must drive extremely fast over rough ground and under constant bombardment,” explained Mr Gillingham, which is why 4x4s are required, as they can handle this terrain.
Pick-ups for Peace currently have another 50 vehicles, with many being more than 15 years old with 100,000 miles on the clock, pledged to their cause. However, it wants to provide even more, taking its goal to 200.
The charity will also need to double its £100,000 fundraising target, which it has just achieved, to pay for the transportation of the vehicles and the return of volunteers.
According to The Scottish Farmer, trips will take place monthly until the end of June at least. This month, two of the vehicles will be transformed into ambulances to transport injured military personnel to hospitals.
If you feel inspired by Pick-ups for Peace, you could update your old for-wheel drive with 4×4 spare parts so it is fit to donate to the cause.
