Road Testing Begins For The First All-Electric Range Rover

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have announced that road testing has begun for a new prototype all electric vehicle. It will be the first fully electric Range Rover, and JLR claim it will also be the quietest model ever created. This will be due to an advanced sound design with integrated road noise cancellation.

JLR have promised that the testing programme will be one of the most vigorous ever, with all types of terrain including water up to depths of 0.85 metres and extreme temperatures of -40c in Sweden and +80c in Dubai. The performance will be comparable to the flagship V8 range, according to the press release.

Thomas Müller, Executive Director, Product Engineering, JLR, said: “We are on target to create the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever created. The magic ingredients that underpin the success of Range Rover remain unchanged: timeless, reductionist design, a serene cabin and go-anywhere capability – but now offered with zero tailpipe emissions.”

He added: “And as repeated throughout history, the Range Rover will continue to set the standard. The first of its type. An electric luxury SUV that can deliver on the Range Rover promise. A true global luxury product, as yet unseen in the industry.”

“Created in the heart of the United Kingdom, the Range Rover Electric will slot into the range alongside its mild hybrid and plug-in electric hybrid siblings, offering a breadth of options to meet our clients’ needs.”

JLR have opened a waiting list for pre-orders of the new electric vehicle, which will be built in Solihull, where a new £70m facility is due to open. The batteries and electric drive units will be assembled at the new Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton.
