How Do You Prepare A 4×4 For Autumn And Winter Driving?

As summer comes to an end, it is worth preparing your 4×4 for the colder, wetter conditions ahead. Autumn and winter can put extra strain on brakes, suspension, tyres, batteries and other components, particularly if you regularly drive on muddy or rural roads.

Check your tyres

Good tyre condition is essential as temperatures fall and roads become wet, icy or muddy. Check your tyre pressures, tread depth and general condition, looking for cracks, bulges or uneven wear.

If your 4×4 is used off-road, make sure your tyres are suitable for the terrain you regularly encounter.

Inspect the brakes and suspension

Wet, muddy roads and winter conditions can increase the demands placed on your vehicle. Check brake pads, discs and other braking components for signs of wear. It is also worth inspecting suspension components for damage, corrosion or excessive wear.

If you notice knocking, unusual noises, poor handling or excessive bouncing, replacement suspension parts may be needed.

Check the battery and electrical system

Cold weather can make it harder for an ageing battery to start your vehicle. Check the battery and make sure your lights, indicators, wipers and other electrical systems are working properly.

Replacing worn or faulty components before winter arrives can help reduce the risk of problems when you need your 4×4 most.

Prepare for mud and water

Autumn often means muddy tracks, standing water and wet roads. After off-road driving, clean mud and debris from underneath your vehicle and check for damage to vulnerable components.

It is also sensible to carry basic emergency equipment, particularly if you regularly travel through remote areas.

Replace worn 4×4 parts before winter

Identifying worn 4×4 vehicle components early gives you time to source the correct spare parts and have repairs completed before winter conditions become more challenging.

A thorough autumn check can help keep your 4×4 reliable, safe and ready for whatever the season brings.
