Essential Tips For Beginners To Try Off Roading In The UK

If you own a 4×4 off road vehicle, but have never fully put it through its paces away from the open highway, then summer is a good time to make your first foray into the world of greenlaning. Here’s a look at what greenlaning involves, and how you can get started.

What is greenlaning?

Greenlaning refers to the practice of driving on public byways, unpaved roads, and tracks that legally permit motor vehicles to use them. These routes are often in some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the UK, so it’s not just a chance to put your vehicle to the test and step up your driving skills, but also to take in some awe-inspiring views.

Plan your route before you set out

It’s important to plan your route carefully and ensure that you stay on the right side of the law. Look for routes that are designated as Byways Open to All Traffic. It is not permitted to take motor vehicles on bridleways, footpaths, or restricted byways.

Check out 4×4 forums or online magazines for route suggestions, because sometimes a greenlane that looks viable on the map is impassable due to deep ruts, narrowness, flooding, mud, dense vegetation, or many other reasons.

Always pick a route that is up to the capabilities of your vehicle and driving experience, and do not bite off more than you can handle.

Prepare your vehicle

Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and you carry tools and spare parts, and have tyres that are suitable for the terrain and weather conditions. It should be equipped with recovery gear such as tow straps and a winch in case you get stuck, and a first aid kit.

Check the weather conditions

If you are venturing into upland areas, remember that the weather can be unpredictable and dense fog or heavy rain can appear very suddenly, so check the weather forecast carefully. If the weather has been very wet, be vigilant for muddy conditions. Avoid tearing up the track by spinning your tyres and reconsider if the route appears too muddy or underwater.

Respect other route users

Remember that you may encounter walkers, cyclists, or horse riders on the route. Be considerate and slow down and pass them carefully.

The Ridgeway, Wiltshire

The Ridgeway is an ancient route that has been used since ancient times by herders and travellers. Certain sections of the Ridgeway are open to motorists, but this may change seasonally so you will need to check in advance. The majority of the trails are considered to be relatively easy and manageable for novice off-road drivers.

Strata Florida, Wales

If you are already familiar with offroading and want to step up your skills, then this route is known for its steep rocky terrain and river crossings. You will need to be kitted out to handle some muddy conditions, and you might want to take a mate along in case you need a push…
