Festival & Camping Ready 4x4s: Is Your Vehicle Prepped?

Summer is prime time to get out and about in your 4×4 and explore remote routes, attend festivals or camp out in the country or coast. Here’s how to get your off-road vehicle ready with spare parts so that it can handle however much mud, sand or rough terrain your summer adventures throw at it.

Check the basics before you go

Before any summer trip, make a quick health check. Examine your brakes, tyres, oil levels, and coolant. Summer heat, heavy loads, and long hours in festival traffic can stress components like batteries, belts, and alternators – all of which are worth inspecting or replacing if they’re nearing the end of their life.

Add a roof rack or roof box for storage

Festivals or camping trips mean tents, sleeping bags, chairs, coolers, and more. Adding a roof rack or roof box gives you much-needed extra space and keeps the interior free for passengers. Look for racks compatible with your 4×4 model, and don’t forget to pack some ratchet straps or cargo nets to secure everything safely.

Upgrade lighting for late nights

Campsites are often poorly lit, and if you are at a festival, navigating your way back through fields or country lanes can be tricky. Consider fitting LED light bars, fog lamps, or upgraded headlight bulbs to improve visibility and safety. Bring spare bulbs and fuses just in case – particularly if you’re using older halogen lights.

Prepare for mud

Summer doesn’t always mean dry weather, and many UK festivals are notorious for turning into mudbaths. If you’re parking on grass or rough ground, pack recovery gear. Mud mats, tow straps, and a small shovel are essential. A basic tool kit and a spare tyre (with jack and wheel brace) are also must-haves.
