The head of Jaguar Land Rover, Adrian Mardell, has robustly denied claims that the Range Rover is Britain’s most stolen vehicle. The luxury 4×4 vehicle regularly tops the lists of ‘Britain’s Most Stolen Cars’ that make annual appearances online and in newspapers.
This has sent insurance costs soaring and even become a complete barrier to insuring a Range Rover with certain companies in the UK. However, BBC News reports that Mr Mardell has refuted the reports, describing them as misinformation and myths.
Speaking at a press conference recently, the JLR boss said: “It is not Britain’s most stolen vehicle, as reported incorrectly.” He commented that only 11 out of a total of 12,800 of the latest Range Rover models had been reported stolen in the UK, and thefts had fallen 27% in comparison to 2022.
Furthermore, Mr Mardell said that JLR has made significant investments to enhance the security of older models of Range Rover.
He added: “There is no reason whatsoever why any insurance company should not gladly and readily insure those new vehicles. Zero reason, in any part of the country. The insurance industry clearly are not using the information and the data. They are very slow to respond to data.”
There is no doubt that Range Rovers are a modern status symbol, often associated with celebrities, sports stars, and politicians. However, this belies its much more utilitarian beginnings in 1970, when it was designed as a general purpose off-road vehicle.
The Range Rover was more commonly associated with the military and agricultural sector rather than the world of showbiz until the 1990s. However, successive generations of the vehicle moved further upmarket, and now it is one of the most advanced and luxurious SUVs available.
