It’s shaping up to be a perfect summer for camping, with the forecast for warmer and drier than average weather. If you have a 4×4 that you love to take off the beaten track and explore new areas, then the UK offers a wide range of camping destinations. Here are some of the best places to pitch up this summer.
If you need any 4×4 parts and accessories to get your vehicle ready for off-road adventures, or body repair paints to sort out chips and dents, please visit our website.
Strata Florida greenlane, West Wales
The Strata Florida greenlane in Ceredigion west Wales, is one of the most popular off-road routes in the UK. It goes through remote Cambrian mountains, offering breathtaking scenery. However, it’s not a novice route as you will encounter rocky steep terrain, and it’s not recommended after heavy rain as it involves some river crossings.
Wild camping is permitted at some sites along the route, and there are also various small campsites in the area if you prefer the convenience of toilets and showers.
Glen Etive, Scottish Highlands
The Glen Etvie road is often described as the UK’s most beautiful route. It winds for 12 miles through the Scottish Highlands, with crystal clear lochs, majestic mountains and plunging glens all around. It was featured in scenes from the 2012 Bond movie Skyfall with the star’s trademark Aston Martin.
Bear in mind that it’s a single track route with limited passing places, and it ends at Loch Etvie, so you will need to return by the same route. It can be challenging to drive in bad weather, but should present nothing that a 4×4 can’t handle. Wild camping is permitted (within the regulations) anywhere in Scotland, but you’ll also find plenty of campsites nearby.
Bala 4×4 Off-road site, north Wales
Bala lake is the largest inland body of water in Wales, with the Snowdonia mountain range rising in the background. It’s a popular destination for watersports fans, but nearby there’s also a 70 acre off-road site suitable for drivers with all levels of experience. It includes all types of terrain, such as water holes, woods, climbs and drops.
It offers a safe and controlled environment for beginners, and it’s also great for groups and drivers seeking a fresh challenge. The whole of Snowdonia is also on the doorstep, with access to classic drives such as the Llanberis Pass and the A470.
The site also holds demonstration days and events, and it’s possible to book a session with a qualified instructor and up to three passengers. Bala is an established tourist spot, with plenty of camping and caravanning sites in the surrounding area to choose from.
